Police are calling for public assistance in searching for a man and his vehicle after an attempted abduction and assault against a child at Montagu Campground near Smithton last night.

Police believe Cecil Maurice Mabb (age 41 from Rosebery) driving a white/silver 2008 Mazda flat tray single cab ute with Queensland registration number 317XNR may be able to assist with the investigation. The vehicle is fitted with a nudge bar, black tonneau cover and has a black plastic front bumper.

The child received some injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Police were last night in contact with him and believe he may have driven into bushland in the Arthur River area.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is being used in the search.

Cecil Mabb (pictured) has been sighted in the bushland in the Marrawah area.

Police confirm he has left his vehicle and is on foot and may attempt to hitchhike from the area. Police have instructed motorists not to pick him up and to call police immediately.

If you have seen the man or his vehicle please contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
