Emergency services responded to serious crash involving an unregistered trail bike

At approximately 6pm on Thursday the 27th of May 2021 police and emergency services responded to a serious crash involving a white Holden Colorado and an unregistered blue Yamaha trail bike on Thompsons Lane at the intersection of Franmaree Road, Newnham.

Initial investigations indicate that the crash occurred when the utility turned right from Tompsons Lane onto Franmaree Road, hitting the trail bike which was travelling east on Thompsons Lane.

As a result of the crash, the 17-year-old male rider from Mayfield and 16-year-old male pillion from Newnham were thrown from the bike and received significant injuries. They were both transported by ambulance to the Launceston General Hospital where they remain in critical condition.

The driver of the utility, a 41 year male from Newnham was uninjured and was conveyed to the LGH for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Initial investigations indicate that the unregistered Yamaha was not fitted with any lights and the riders were wearing dark clothing and no protective clothing. Neither was wearing a helmet. Visibility of the Yamaha is believed to be a contributing factor to the crash.

Crash Investigation Services attended the scene and conducted an examination, investigations are ongoing.

Police are seeking witnesses who may have information which will assist in the investigation, including dash cam footage and/or residential CCTV footage covering Tompsons Lane.
