Carjacker causes multiple rollovers

Tasmania Police Seeking Go Pro

Police today have charged a 48-year old North Hobart man with carjacking and two counts of attempted carjacking following dangerous driving incident this morning on the Tasman Highway at Cambridge.

At 7.05am, police received multiple calls in relation to a man in the northbound lanes of the Tasman Highway, just prior to the Cambridge turnoff, throwing rocks at vehicles and running in amongst the traffic.

Police will allege that the offender collided with a number of vehicles during the incident.  The offender was driving a blue Mazda he had forcibly taken control of from a female motorist after at least two previous attempts upon other motorists.

A second vehicle also rolled at the scene, while trying to avoid the man and vehicles.  The single occupant of this vehicle was taken to the RHH for assessment but released shortly after.

The man will appear in an after-hours bedside court later today.  Investigations are continuing into further offences relating to the incident.

Tasmania Police would like to thank motorists for their patience this morning as emergency services attended to the scene, as well as the broader community for the valuable information provided to assist with the investigation.
